Center for Life Sciences and Techno-Anthropology

The Center for Life Sciences and Techno Anthropology has been established with the aim of facilitating interdisciplinary cooperation within areas that affect bio sciences. Recognizing that the unknown is an indisputable part of the future and yesterday's answer is hardly enough to solve the problems of the future, there is a need to provide room for new thinking and creativity. It is thus also in the status of the Center that its subject areas can be changed or new can be added as a result of the scientific and technological development, changing cooperation opportunities or the current competency composition at the center.

Techno-Anthropology and Participation (TAPAR / Planning)

Techno-Anthropology and Participation (TAPAR) is an interdisciplinary research group dedicated to research of new and emergent technologies, where we focus on the relations between technology, humans, and society. Our key vision is democracy in tech innovation and our mission is to contribute to responsible technology innovation and use. We do this by researching complex problems related to emerging technologies and tech innovation processes. This includes research and education in engineering practice and transition processes, ethical assessment of new and emerging technologies, philosophy of technology, technology creativity and design, technology innovation management and user participation. We conduct empirical studies that contribute insights on the interplay between humans, technology and society within multiple areas with special attention to health/welfare technology and green/sustainable technology. Our research is highly change-oriented in emergent and complex human-technology relations of societal relevance. We combine anthropology and action research to build bridges between local knowledge, technology innovation and technology transition processes. We work with Participatory Design methods and we value empirically grounded research on how to involve people affected by technology in design of future socio-technical practices.

    Techno-Anthropology Research Group (Learning)

The Techno-Anthropology (TANT) group researches key processes of social and technical innovation that are critical to the challenges facing contemporary and future societies. Complicated societal issues are unlikely to be solved by technical fixes. We therefore believe that workable solutions and a responsible development of technology must build on the active consideration of social relations, the engagement of users, and an in-depth understanding of the complexities of technology-in-use.

    Techno-Anthropological Laboratory

We are a digital methods research lab at the University of Aalborg in Copenhagen. Housed by the Techno-Anthropology Research Group we work interdisciplinarily with a strong background in science and technology studies. For us, techno-anthropology signals not just a concern with the anthropological study of techno-science, but a technologically enabled anthropology. We develop data-driven research designs and computationally intensive research methods for the social sciences and humanities.
